Why I Love Toronto Reason #260
Junction Flea / The Junction
I love flea markets, just as much as I love a good vintage store, because you can find some of the most amazing things ever. Now I was reminded of this event because I saw my friend/ co-worker Sam today who once told me told me about how one weekend she wandered to this flea with her boyfriend in the Junction.
The Junction flea happens the second Sunday of every month and is poised to become a summer tradition. Holding its first ever flea on June 10th the Junction flea will wrap up on September 12th. The Junction flea is located on Dundas West in an empty lot and is an amazing place to find antiques, handmade arts and crafts, vintage clothing, records, type writers, cowboy related clothing and tacky pictures you would only find in your grandmothers outdated basement. It is like a blast from the past, but let’s be honest the older/ more retro it is the cooler it is as well. I think of it as a big garage sale.
The Junction itself is a very interesting neighbourhood growing around railway tracks. The rail industry was a major business for the area with the opening of rail yards and railway stations. Due to these openings many male workers came to the area and with those men the neighbourhood saw a rise in the number of taverns opening. This led the area to, what the Junction BIA says, be compared to the Wild West. Therefore a ban on the sale of alcohol was in put in place until 1998, but some also argue that this ban lasted until 2000. Regardless of when this ban ended the Junction had a modern day prohibition – how cool is that! As soon as the ban was lifted the area started to become a hotspot for nightlife with BlogTO calling it “the next Queen West.” I never considered the Junction to be considered a hot spot until one night I got on the Vomit Comet with a group of drunk Hipsters who were raving about going to the Junction to continue their epic night.
Anyways the Junction I will admit is a really rad area, with a very interesting history. However, the Junction Flea is an amazing monthly event that is so much fun to attend, for some of the things you may find are so retro you may think they belong in a museum or on another planet.
That is Why I Love Toronto.
