What I Want To See:
Bridgepoint...

Why I Love Doors Open Toronto

What I Want To See:

Bridgepoint Hospital and Administration Building

Where: 14 St. Matthews Road

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Why I Want To See It: Two words – Don Jail. In the past year the Bridgepoint Hospital has fully restored the historic Don Jail so that it could be incorporated into its facility. The last time the jail made a Doors Open appearance was before its restoration in which participants got a chance to see the jail. My friend who attended said it was truly a creepy experience. Therefore, you can count me in!

Dineen Building

Where: 140 Yonge Street

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Want to See It: As I said in my previous post, I just really want to see the building after its restoration. The owner of the building boasts that many of the original fixtures and accessories from the Dineen Hat and Fur Company still remain, which should be very interesting to see and provide a glimpse of the building former use.

Fox Theatre

Where: 2236 Queen Street East

When: Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Why I Want To See It: This is the theatres first appearance at Doors Open. Not only do you get to see this local theatre, but you also get a free bag of popcorn and get to go on a tour of the historic theatre that will celebrate its 100th birthday this year.

Havergal College

Where: 1451 Avenue Rd.

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Why I Want To See It: What is every girls dream? Well for the women in my family it is to be a princess and the all-girls school of Havergal College truly looks like a castle fit for a princess. From its gothic architecture to its vine covered towers and stained glass this building by Chapman and Oxley is truly another one of the firms masterpieces.

Humber College – Cottages

Where: 21 Colonel Samuel Smith Park Dr.

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Why I Want To See It: As the former site of the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital/ Mimico Hospital this former institution is said to have a number of hauntings, which could make this Doors Open tour both creepy and epic. The fact that we get to see the tunnel system is more than enough reason to go to this venue!

MaRS Discovery District

Where: 101 College Street

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Why I Want To See It: I was so upset when I missed this building last year that I really hoped it would make another appearance. I am interested to see if this building has successfully managed to combine both historic and modern architecture together. Along with my architectural critiques , I will also be going to MaRS to learn about its history. For example the hospital played a huge role in the discovery of insulin.

Massey Tower Presentation Centre

Where: 197 Yonge Street

When: Saturday and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with tours at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Why I Want To See It: The building was recently restored and made into a presentation centre for the condominium tower that MOD Development plans to build. Being a big fan of former banks and following the restoration process on the Massey Tower Facebook page I am excited to see the final result.

St. Andrews Church

Where: 73 Simcoe St.

When: Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Why I Want to See It: I love churches and it is unfortunate for me to admit this, but I cannot attend Doors Open on Saturday because I have to work. However the building, constructed in 1875 recently underwent a restoration. I say check it out and tell me how it was!

St. George Greek Orthodox Church

Where: 115 Bond St.

When: Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Want To See It: Being Orthodox I know the detailing and iconography that goes into Orthodox churches, therefore it would be interesting to see an Orthodox church from the perspective of the Greeks.

Why I Love Doors Open Toronto
My Recommendations:
401 Richmond...

Why I Love Doors Open Toronto

My Recommendations:

401 Richmond Street West

Where: 401 Richmond Street West

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: I always seem to find myself at 401 Richmond for some kind of event. The former home of the Macdonald Manufacturing Company is a heritage building that still has many of its original architectural features. Plus the courtyard is beautiful and I once saw a series of black and white silent films there for Nuit Blanche.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Black Creek Pioneer Village

Where: 1000 Murray Ross Parkway

When: Saturday and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It:This truly is a historical experience that allows you to travel back in time. Meant to mimic a south central Ontario village between 1790 and1860, this working village is a blast from the past with the staff all decked out in period costumes.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Bloor Hot Docs Cinema

Where: 506 Bloor Street West

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: I won’t lie; when you go into this venue you are only seeing a single screen theatre. However, this Doors Open exhibit is more than that and exposes you to the history of the theatre from its multiple name changes to its time as a XXX Theatre known for its heavily censored adult films.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Bloor Street United Church

Where: 300 Bloor Street West

When: Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: Mystery/ curiosity - I have walked in this part of the Annex all my life and have looked at this church and wondered what it looked like inside. The exterior is truly magnificent and even though the interior does not compare to that of St. Michael’s Cathedral it is still beautiful. Plus there are multiple rumours that the church may add a condominium complex.

Burwash Dining Hall

Where: 89 Charles Street West

When: Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00p.m.

Why I Loved It: I never went to U of T, but almost all of my friends did. One of my friends actually lived on campus and had a meal plan which meant she got to eat at Burwash. One night she invited me to dine with her and the thing that made me love Burwash was simply that the high ceilings and windows made me feel like I was in a Harry Potter film.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Canada Life Building

Where: 330 University Ave.

When: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: Housing the famous weather beacon, this Doors Open building takes you up to the 17th floor to get a beautiful must see panoramic view of the city.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Church of the Holy Trinity

Where: 10 Trinity Square (The Church nestled in the Eaton Centre courtyard next to Sears)

When: Saturday 10:00 a.m. t0 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: Nestled in the courtyard of the Toronto Eaton Centre this church has a unique history involving the Don Valley Brickworks and a woman named Mary Lambert Swale who left specific instructions in her will on the construction and operation of the house of prayer. Plus if you’re lucky, you’ll get to hear the choir sing.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Colborne Lodge Musuem

Where: 11 Colborne Lodge Dr. (in High Park)

When: Saturday and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: Colborne Lodge is why we have High Park. The home and property was owned by Sir John and Jemima Howard. The homestead is said to be haunted by them, but out of all my times going to the historic house I have never experienced anything paranormal, but apparently my father has. It was also interesting to learn about the home and imagining it as having the best view of Lake Ontario (at the time).

Why I Love Toronto Post

Commerce Court North

Where: 25 King Street West

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00am to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: Commerce Court North is one of the places in Toronto I would love to get married at. The ceiling, windows and chandeliers are all so stunning that it would be a pleasure to say I Do there.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Corus Quay:

Where: 25 Dockside Drive (next to Sugar Beach)

When: Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: The building is such a magnificent modern structure and has a beautiful view of the Lake Ontario and is right next to Sugar Beach. Corus Quay is home to a number of media properties including Q107, 102.1 The Edge, YTV and Kids Can Press. However, we all know you’re interested in seeing the slide. I mean I’ve been to Corus Quay for work and it is that slide that always gets my attention.

Dineen Building

Where: 140 Yonge Street

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: I am doing this building for this year’s doors open, but it is on my recommended list simply because this building sat in a state of despair for years and recently just completed a restoration project that brought the building back to its glorious state. I think it would be interesting to see the interior of the former workshop for the Dineen Hat and Fur Company.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Elgin/ Winter Garden Theatre

Where: 189 Yonge Street

When: Saturday and Sunday – Tours at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: This was simply my favourite building at last year’s event. The Winter Garden Theatre is truly a sight to see and it feels like you are stepping into a world that resembles the mysterious Wonderland. Plus the Winter Garden Theatre has an eerie relation to John Dillinger.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Why I Love Doors Open Toronto

My Recommendations:

Old City Hall

Where: 60 Queen Street West

When:Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It:A building by famed architect E.J. Lennox, the structure is an amazing example of a Romanesque Rival building. From its magnificent stained glass to the details in the exterior stone, the building will make you want to ooh and awe. Plus it is said to be haunted by the last two men ever sentenced to death in Canada and concerns are mounting about the buildings future once the current lease is due in a few years.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Osgoode Hall

Where: 130 Queen Street West

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: The library, stained glass, light fixtures and American Room are all reason to check the building out. Plus a number of people have reportedly died violently in the building leading this Toronto enthusiast to believe its haunted!

Why I Love Toronto Post

One King West Hotel & Residence

Where: 1 King Street West

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: The main hall is absolutely stunning with its grand ceiling, but the highlight is going down the vault which may be the heaviest door I have ever encountered. Let’s just say I’d hate to be the horses that had to pull it up Yonge Street when the vault door first arrived

Why I Love Toronto Post

Ontario Legislative Building (Queens Park)

Where: 111 Wellesley Street West

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: Simply its Richardsonian Romanesque style and the two very distinct styles in the buildings west and east wing make it architectural masterpiece. Plus it sat on the ground of an old asylum, is haunted and is called The Pink Palace.

Why I Love Toronto Post

R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant

Where: 2701 Queen Street West

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: Truly living up to its name as the Palace of Purification the building, which is a water treatment facility, is covered with bronze, marble and limestone. The exterior makes it look so grand you almost think it could be an old asylum, prison or government building. Ps. the clock is a must see!

Why I Love Toronto Post

Revue Cinema

Where: 400 Roncesvalles Ave.

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Why I Loved It: Over 100 years old the Revue Cinema is one of the last single screen theatres in the city. The theatre was shut down for a period of time before it became a not-for-profit cinema. The façade is iconic to the Roncesvalles area even though it has only been around for 6 years.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Rosedale North Service Station

Where: 10 Scrivener Square

When: Saturday 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with tours at 12:00 p.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Why I Loved It: Aside from housing one of the most beautiful LCBO’s in Toronto, this building is everything I imagined an old train station to look like. With a clock tower peering over Yonge Street, large arched windows and a marquee that you would usually associate with single-screen theatres this station truly defines the Summerhill area.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Scadding Cabin

Where: 2 Strachan Ave.

When: Saturday and Sunday 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with tours at 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: It’s the oldest surviving house in Toronto, therefore it has so much history attached to it.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Scarborough Arts

Where: 1859 Kingston Rd.

When: Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: Simply because I interned there for a year in university and was proud to be helping them with their mission to promote local artists. Furthermore, it is in a great location and close to the Rosetta McClain Gardens and the Scarborough Bluffs.

Spadina House:

Where: 285 Spadina Rd.

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: The house has its original furniture which, believe it or not, is something rare for a historical house. Not to mention the gardens are magnificent, the billiards room is every man’s dream and the taxidermy wolves at the front entrance are a must see to believe.

Why I Love Toronto Post

E.J. I’m back and just in time as...

Why I Love Doors Open Toronto

I’m back and just in time as well! Doors Open Toronto is this weekend! So from Monday to Wednesday I’ll be giving you my recommendations from past Doors Open Toronto’s and on Thursday and Friday I’ll tell you what I’m excited to see!

My Recommendations:

Gladstone Hotel

Where: 1214 Queen Street West

When: Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with tours at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: It has the last hand operated elevator in Toronto, is the only safe place for one’s great aunt to stay alone and has a Tiger Beat inspired room. I think that’s all I need to say.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Hudson’s Bay Queen Street Location

Where: 176 Yonge Street

When: Tours from Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: The former Robert Simpson store was built by multiple architects during various stages. It burned down before it opened, had a grand entrance on Richmond Street which has since been blocked off and a memorial for the stores workers that perished during the World War.

Why I Love Toronto Post

King Edward Hotel

Where: 37 King Street East

When: Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Why I Loved It: John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged their bed-ins for peace at the King Eddy and Elizabeth Taylor visit caused major protests when she stayed in the hotel with Richard Burton before they were married (little did the protestors know they would become engaged on the trip). Lastly the neglected Crystal Ballroom is one of the 3 places I would love to have my wedding.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex

Where: 25 British Columbia Road (Exhibition Place)

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: The former government building is the place where dreams are made. From proms to weddings see the place that was more about politics than romance.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Mackenzie House

Where: 82 Bond Street

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: Stepping into the home of the first mayor of Toronto, is like starting from square one. Plus if you’re lucky maybe you can make something on the printing press.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Massey Tower Presentation Centre

Where: 197 Yonge Street

When: Saturday and Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with tours at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Why I Loved It: I haven’t been into the former Bank of Commerce since its restoration, but I still love this building because it sat abandoned for years on the property across from the Toronto Eaton Centre waiting to get a renewal of life. Just seeing the pictures of the restoration made me smile and I will have an even bigger smile when I see the restoration first hand.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens (Maple Leaf Gardens)

Where: 50 Carlton Street (corner of Church Street)

When: Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with tours at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m.

Why I Loved Toronto: I got to skate on the ice here and there was just this amazing feeling that overcame me when I did. Even though the ice rink isn’t the original one where the Toronto Maple Leafs won there Stanley Cup, just being in the former home of Maple Leafs and being in the same building where fans cheered as they won the Cup is enough to make this Leaf fan recommend this building for you.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Metropolitan United Church

Where: 56 Queen Street East

When: Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with tours at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m.

Why I Loved It: As one of the largest United Churches this building has a number of must details from the pews, altar and stained glass.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Montgomery’s Inn

Where: 4709 Dundas Street West

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Why I Loved It: I’ve always had a soft spot for this building being an Etobicoke boy, but bias aside the building is just a great history lesson for those wanting to learn more about the Islington area.

Why I Love Toronto Post

Munk School of Global Affairs

Where: 315 Bloor Street West

When: Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with tours at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Why I Loved It: One of my favourite buildings on the U of T campus, the Munk School of Global Affairs recently opened after being restored and expanded. Once home to the Dominion of Meteorological Service and the Admissions and Awards Office of U of T, the building it noted for the detail work over the Bloor Street entrance way as well as for its tower.

First of all I know I said I’d be on hiatus, but I couldn’t resist. I love this city and my readers too much not to mention this event!

This weekend is the return of the popular Toronto Comic Arts Festival (or known simply known as TCAF). The event will be celebrating its 10th anniversary and will be held at The Toronto Reference Library. The event is free to attend and is great for those Dating on a Budget ;). The TCAF festivities started earlier this week, but no worries because there are still plenty events to attend. This is great festival that is a celebration of comic culture and I am so bummed to be missing it this year!

The two events that I wouldn’t have mind seeing include:

The World of Taiyo Matsumoto, a gallery exploring the career of Taiyo Matsumoto The event will be held at 131 Bloor Street West on the second floor and is on May 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

TCAF Queer Mixer: Featuring Tagame & Vellekoop! This is becoming such a big genre in the comic world, so it would interesting to learn some more about it. Plus for many who will celebrate Pride next month you can call this an early celebration. The mixer will celebrate gay comic icons Tagame and Vellekoop on May 11 from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Also Bill Amend, David B. Blutch, Boulet, Ivan Brunetti and C.F. will be this year’s featured guest!

Check out the original post I did for TCAF below to learn about the history of this event!

Happy Throwback Thursday! #TBT

Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival

A picture is worth a thousand words and with number photographs that will be displayed during the month of May for Scotiabank’s CONTACT Photography Festival that number is sure to be in the billions. As one of my favourite Scotiabank festivals, CONTACT takes over cafes, shops, TTC stations and eateries for the whole month of May and makes them into outlets for creative expression. From local to national and international photographers the festival provides us with numerous ways to see the world.

CONTACT is a not-for-profit that started 16 years ago with the goal of celebrating and fostering photography as a profession. The festival has become the largest photography event in the world. The theme for this year’s festival is “Field of Vision.”

Unlike last year were numerous unforeseen circumstances occurred, this year I am ready to see some photographs and working in Liberty Village is a major perk as it is close to the portion of Queen Street West that is frequented by the galleries and shops that partake in the festival. Below I have listed a few of the exhibits I want to see and above I have provided an image that represents some of them.

So enjoy the festival and tell me what you plan to see! Tweet me at @whyilovetoronto, tag me in your Instagram @whyilovetoronto or send me a message on Tumblr! I’d love to hear your suggestions and your thoughts on the ones I’ve suggest!

Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival

From the TIFF Kids International Film Festival to the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival (Hot Docs Festival), which is going on now until May 5th, the past month has truly been a great one for cinema lovers in Toronto. This year marks the Hot Docs festival 20th anniversary of showcasing hard-hitting, informative and heartbreaking real life stories from around the world. The festival is North America’s largest documentary film festival, conference and market and this year will feature over 205 documentaries from 43 countries. The festival will see its fair share of premieres including 44 world, 51 international, 31 North American, 46 Canadian and 14 Toronto premieres.

This year’s festival will see a number of compelling documentaries, one of which will be Lt.-General Romeo Dallaire’s Fight Like Soldiers, Die Like Children, which follows the Canadian soldier on his mission to end the use of child soldiers. From what I’ve studied about child soldiers in university, this film is sure to be both devastating and sickening. For those of you who don’t know, Dallaire is notable for his book Shake Hands with the Devil based on his time in Rwanda during the genocide.

Anita Hill’s film Anita is another film to watch out for according to many sources. The film which recounts the sexual harassment case against Clarence Thomas and showcases who the case changed not only Hill’s life but America.

Other films I would love to see include The Burger and the King a film about Elvis as well as Buying Sex a film about the recent fight in Ontario in relation to prostitution laws and the different perspectives on the issue. The film Great North Korean Picture Show is sure to be an interesting film given all the drama surrounding North Korea in the past month as well as giving us a look into one of the most secretive and isolated countries in the world. Interior. Leather Bar. from the mind of James Franco is a film that is so sex driven its premiere at the festival was at midnight last Friday. The film focusing on gay sex and S&M has a deeper message about sexual freedom and creative risk-taking. However, let’s be honest putting James Franco, S&M and Gay Sex together is probably reason enough for people to see the movie.

With such an array of documentaries this festival covers so many diverse topics that will leave you seeing the world in a whole different perspective. It is for that reason that I love this festival and

J.D Salinger’s letters to a Toronto woman.
I...

Why I Love Toronto

J.D Salinger’s letters to a Toronto woman.

I find it so fascinating when famous historical figures or authors have a Toronto connection. If you remember a post I did last year on Famous People who call Toronto Home you will know that Amelia Earhart lived in the city and it was her where her interest of flying began. Earhart came to Toronto in 1917 to visit her sister Muriel, but extended her stay when she saw the effects of World War One on Canada. Earhart became a nurse at the Spadina Military Hospital which we know today as 1 Spadina Crescent. Another notable figure was Ernest Hemingway who once called the city home and even wrote for the Toronto Daily Star.

Now J.D. Salinger did not live in Toronto like Earhart or Hemmingway, but his connection is a rather interesting one to the city and one that made me smile. The Catcher in the Rye is my second favourite book of all time – The Great Gatsby being the first - and its discontinued iconic white cover has had me searching every used bookstore in Toronto since 2008 – my friend Sook eventually found a copy for me. Even his short story A Perfect Day for Bananafish is a remarkable piece.

Well it turns out that because of a Toronto woman, we are able to have a peek into the life of Salinger before the Rye. In 1941 Salinger became pen pals (something I’d be shocked if a generation younger than myself knows) with Marjorie Sheard, who was a fan of his pieces in Esquire and Collier. Sheard had been asking the author for advice as she was an aspiring author. The pair exchanged nine letters in which Salinger requested some works by himself, Hemmingway and Fitzgerald for her to read, a flirtatious letter in which he asked for Sheard’s photo and one in which he questioned The New Yorker after providing them with his story about Holden Caulfield.

These letters came to light after Sheard sold them to the Morgan Library and Museum, so that she could pay for her medical care. In sum, this is truly an astounding story that has captured my heart. I also find this side of Salinger very interesting because my grade 12 English teacher spoke of the author as if he was sort of a Boo Radley in life. However, these letters make him seem approachable and show the man before Holden Caulfield became one of best known literary characters of all time.

The question now is did Salinger keep Sheard’s letters? If so where are they? We only have half of the story, but by gosh it is an amazing half none the least.

That is Why I Love Toronto

Dream in High Park.

Ariel and I had a Skype date one day and I was telling her about all the exciting things I had planned for us this summer when she got back from Ireland. I had told her we should have a picnic one day in the Garden District, which led her to say (and I paraphrase),

Stephan we need to have a picnic during the Dream in High Park! We can’t get there last minute and sit on an awkward hill were we have to dig our heels into the ground so we don’t slide down. We need to get there early get a nice seat and bring food. I’ll bring the deviled eggs!

As soon as she said that I had to see what the play was going to be this year. Last year it was an amazing rendition of A Midsummers Night Dream. Since I have been going to the event I have seen A Midsummers Night Dream twice, A Winter’s Tale, The Tempest and a modern version of Romeo and Juliet that I didn’t connect with. However, the two plays I have been waiting to see during the summer production are The Taming of The Shrew and Twelfth Night .

Well this year the Dream in High Park will be putting on two productions! Yes, I said two productions and they will be in association with York University. The two plays that will showcased this year, on alternating nights are…drum roll please…

Macbeth and The Taming of The Shrew!

I’m so stoked! I think the scene with The Witches in Macbeth will be epic under the stars and Katherine is such a powerful character that will liven up the stage! Anyways check out my review for last year’s Dream and my original Why I Love Toronto post below!

Maizal Quesadilla Café

Like all my Toronto adventures this one started with a dilemma. My friend Renee and I planned a lunch date and like always we didn’t know where to eat. That is why I enlisted the help of my co-worker Leila who had suggested we go to this Greek place on Jefferson Ave. (in Liberty Village). As we started walking toward the suggested venue I noticed the word “quesadilla” on a window. I was very intrigued because when you think about a Mexican restaurant the focus is mostly on Tacos. Therefore, when I saw the words quesadilla and café, I knew that this was going to be an exciting adventure.

The eatery is called Maizal Quesadilla Café and it is a Mexican restaurant that does not focus on Tacos – there was literally only one taco dish on the menu. I found this very refreshing as I was never a taco fan. What is most interesting about Maizal is that the quesadilla’s are made fresh daily – and I mean daily. The tortillas are made at the restaurant with the establishments very own Nixtamex corn grinder, which you can see when you walk in. You can also read the step by step process of how they make your quesadilla on the blackboard above.

Now the menu itself is pretty small, but has some great selections. They have a variety of vegetarian ($5 for one or $8.50 for two) and meat quesadilla’s ($6 for one, 10.50 for two) to choose from which are served with a side of pico de gallo and organic black beans. They do also serve other food like the one taco dish as well as Frijoles and other tortilla made creations.

The restaurant has a very cute presentation. It has a patio outside for the summer months, light coloured wood floors, pops of colour in the walls, a seating area for while you wait for a table and a homage to the owners Mexican heritage on the walls in the main dining area. Your food is also served in weaved baskets traditionally used in Central and South American countries.

Not only is this a great date option for the affordable food, but they also host “Noche de Danzon” a night where you can learn Danzon, a romantic slow dance from Mexico. It is suggested you pay between $5 and $10 and sign up by emailing the owner. The event has happened twice thus far and unfortunately I have never been to a lesson because they fall on the on night I always have to work. However, this is a fun date event because let’s be honest if we’ve learned anything from Strictly Ballroom, Shall We Dance and Silver Linings Playbook it is that dancing is the way to a person’s heart.

So let me break it down for all you students on a budget. If you go early enough you can take a stroll through Liberty Village ($0), have a meal (between $5-$10), and learn to dance (between $5-$10) all for under $30. Check their website for information on upcoming dance lessons, but if you just want to take your date to have some international cooking then Maizal Quesadilla Café is that place.

That is how to date on a budget in Toronto.

TIFF Kids International Film Festival

Imagination. My father said I had the wildest imagination as a kid. I would make Lego villages, with Lego people and make up soap opera like storylines for them. My mom made me an art station where I could draw, paint and glue macaroni together to make some questionable art pieces I would call Christmas gifts and my grandmother would let me tell her these ridiculous stories about monsters and superheroes that I supposedly saw on my way to school. Yes as a child my imagination let me believe that anything was possible and that I could do anything.

I am bringing this up because last week I attended some screenings at the TIFF Kids International Film Festival. After seeing six films I noticed two common themes emerge in all them. The first was that a child’s imagination can lead to endless possibilities and the second was that if you believe, you can achieve.

TIFF Kids, as the event is commonly referred to as, is a festival for children between the ages of 3 to 13 and has been around for the last sixteen years. This year’s festival featured 115 films from 40 countries and had a diverse range of genres from animation to Claymation to comedy and drama. The festival also featured Q&A sessions with some of the directors of the films, where children got to ask questions like “How did you make the aliens” or “Did you like making the film?” These films and Q&A sessions are a great learning experience for children and teaches them about different cultures, languages, the world of film and the most valuable lesson which is “if you set your mind to it you can achieve great things.”

As mentioned above I was lucky to see six films, five shorts and one full length feature. The first set of films I saw was a compilation of short films called Creativity Unleashed, which showed you what can happen when you unleash your imagination. The films included were Sky Colour, The Invention, My Strange Grandfather, The Intergalactic Space Adventures of Cleo and Anouk (which I was lucky enough to hear the director Celeste Koon speakabout) and Caine’s Arcade. All of these films taught me that having an imagination is crucial to your development as it allows you to be creative, passionate and solve problems. The feature film I saw was a British film entitled Believe, whichtruly made me believe in something. It made me believe in second chances, hope and reminded me to never doubt yourself.

Also, I have to note how adorable the Programme Guide was to read. We all know that films have content advisories, for example, “this film may have nudity and coarse language viewer discretion is advised”. Well the Programme Guide for TIFF Kids also has advisories, but they are not what an adult would think is advisory worthy. Below are some of my favourite advisories from the Programme,

“Discussion of violent crime”

“Urination”

“Romantic situations”

“Student skips class”

“Deceased mother seen in visions”

“Romantic kiss on the cheek”

You have to admit this is really cute and to an early 20 year old like myself, they are utterly hilarious. However, being their first hand I understand why those advisories were included because when those kids saw that kiss on the cheek between the boy and the girl there was sheer panic.

Lastly, the digiPlayspace, an interactive area where kids could make their own shorts film, experience a green screen and play with other media technologies, returned to the TIFF Bell Lightbox.

“Films to Fill the Imagination.” That is the slogan for TIFF Kids and from the films that were showcased to their brilliant logo and the digiPlayspace, I truly believe that the festival was able to live up and stay true to its slogan. Experiencing international movies, being exposed to culture, getting to talk to directors and having some hands on fun is so entertaining and educational. Plus it reminds all of us how important having an imagination is.

That is Why I Love Toronto.

Scotiabank Buskerfest

It’s weird to writing a post about an event that marks the end of summer when spring just literally began on Monday. However, on Tuesday it was announced that the Scotiabank Buskerfest in support of Epilepsy Toronto would be saying its goodbyes to the St. Lawrence Market area and hello to one of the busiest streets in Toronto – Yonge Street.

The move is largely due in part to the increasing number of people who visit the event each year. Last year over a million people came to see an international squad of Buskers from Yonge to Jarvis on Front Street. I will admit that the area is too small and when I went last year I felt as though I was making my way through a nightclub. To put it in perspective from Yonge to Jarvis is about 0.55 km, whereas the new location between Queen Street West and College will add about another 0.45km making the festival 1km in length.

However, I do see some pro and cons to the move. A major con is that the St. Lawrence Market area is a beautiful place. From the architecture of the Gooderman Building (Flatiron) to the old row houses turned shops to St. Lawrence Market itself, the area is truly a great representation of Toronto’s past. My major concern with Yonge Street is that it is already such a busy pedestrian spot. It is known as the heart of Toronto and on any given weekend the area is packed with shoppers and tourists, not to mention the bumper to bumper traffic which for the event will move to other spots of the city. However, a pro with Yonge Street is that the festival will be more accessible with multiple TTC stops. Not only do you have Queen, Dundas and College Station, but you have the 501, 505 and 506 Streetcars that all stop at Yonge as opposed to the walk you would need take from King or Union Station to get to Yonge and Front. Another pro for Yonge Street is that it does have Yonge-Dundas Square which can fit a large number of Buskers.

Overall, no matter where it is located Scotiabank Buskerfest is a great way to support Epilepsy Toronto and is a pay what you can event. However, I do suggest you bring some coin as it is customary to drop money into the Buskers hat after they are done performing. Every year Buskers with remarkable talents from around the world come to perform. From break dancers, daredevils, contortionists and sword swallowers - just to name a few – it is truly a see it to believe it event.

So click the link below to read the original Scotiabank Buskerfest post and make sure to check out the event at its new home August 22nd to 25th 2013.

Happy #ThrowbackThursday!

The Restoration of the Toronto Silver Plate...

Past

Present-ish

Future

Why I Love Toronto

The Restoration of the Toronto Silver Plate Company Factory

Restoration. It has to be one of my favourite words in the English language. To me the word restore means to breathe new life into something or to give a second chance. Many buildings that are restored get that opportunity after being neglected for years. These buildings are usually in a state of despair, are eroding, discoloured, victims of vandalism, abandoned and falling apart, which is something that is not attractive in an up-and-coming area like King-Spadina

Many of you may know that one of my favourite restoration projects has to be that of the former Bank of Commerce on Yonge Street which is an architectural wonder that has been left in despair for years. However, MOD Developments is in the process of restoring and integrating the former bank into the new Massey Tower. Yes I will agree that the condominium situation in Toronto is a tad extreme, but if a historical building with so much history is restored in the process then I am all for it! I mean it’s either that or the building gets demolished for a new condominium project.

That is why today’s post is dedicated to the restoration and integration of the Toronto Silver Plate Company Factory into the future Fashion House Condominiums. Sitting at 570 King Street West the building is the former factory of Toronto Silver Plate Company which was founded in 1882 by James A. Watt. The company, which would be taken over by E.G. Gooderham, eventually became a major player in the Canadian silver plating industry. The building itself holds both architectural and cultural values that are significant to the history of the King-Spadina neighbourhood. One of the main architectural values of the building is that it is a prime example of a late 19th century industrial building and is noted for its unusual gable roof and peak. Culturally, the building is one of the earliest surviving factory complexes in the neighbourhood.

For myself the moment I saw the roof and brick, I knew that the building had some sort of importance to the city of Toronto. However, after years of passing the building on the King Streetcar I would have never been able to guess it was a factory. I honestly thought that the building was a home or an orphanage and that is in large part due to its gable roof which resembles the roof of a house. Sadly though after my years of passing the building I started to notice it was being neglected.

So when I originally saw the scaffolding go up I had a feeling that the building would be torn down and that a part of history would be lost. Well, I was wrong. Today the former factory will be incorporated into a 12 storey, 334 residential condominium. This is a match that I see fitting for the area for the new condominium structure and the old factory will do a fantastic job in complimenting each other. The condominium will speak to Toronto’s future and the development of the King-Spadina area, while the factory will speak to its past as an industrial neighbourhood.

If you walk by the complex today the windows to the condominium are being installed and the building still looks like it is has been neglected. However, the restoration of the former factory will soon begin and the Fashion House will have been able to achieve a perfect fusion of old and new Toronto.

The restoration and integration of a heritage landmark is

Wheat Sheaf Tavern

Known as one of Toronto’s oldest bars the Wheat Sheaf Tavern opened in 1849 and quickly became a popular bar for soldiers. The tavern is known for its mystery, architecture and the fact that it was a men’s only establishment until 1969!

Being the geek I am I have to acknowledge the architecture of the building, which is truly haunting. The black roof makes it look like a haunted mansion and the brick (both inside and out) give it such a historical and aged feeling. However, that was before the building was restored. In fact, in one of the photos (with the citation that says City of Toronto Archives) the building actually had a white exterior. I’ll be honest I don’t know what it is with painting buildings white (take my favourite house at 31 Sussex Ave. as an example), but I think it takes away from the buildings character. However I will admit the tallest point on the roof facing North East looks stunning with that black accent. Furthermore, the window that is there is especially creepy and looks like the perfect place for a ghost to be looking out. Luckily there have been no reported hauntings.

Now as I teased earlier there is a mystery to this building that dates back to the soldiers at Fort York. There seems to be a myth that there is a tunnel that connects Fort York to the tavern and was dug out by the soldier so that they could escape and have a drink. Even though this myth has been popular for years many online publications don’t believe the story. In fact one report says if there were tunnels it would be where the woman’s bathroom is today. However, historians who study Fort York will tell you that the soldiers were given rations of beer and spirits daily. Plus it’s not like they’d meet any woman because the bar was segregated. So what would be the point? Regardless, it is such a believable story that when I told my uncle I was going to the Tavern he sat me down and said, “now if you stumble upon a hidden tunnel, call me ASAP.”

Regardless of the tunnel myth, Wheat Sheaf Tavern is great hangout place, especially if you are watching sports. It’s in a great area of the city and it truly is a historical gem. Oh yeah and it’s

Yorkdale Shopping Centre
I don’t understand...

#ThrowbackThursday

Yorkdale Shopping Centre

I don’t understand Yorkdale Shopping Centre. I mean how much land does that mall have that it can keep expanding? It was only last November that the mall opened its most recent expansion and on Monday it was announced once again that the mall would be expanding.

Contrary to the impression you may have got from my initial paragraph I am actually excited for the project. In Monday’s release Yorkdale Shopping Centre said it would be adding 300,000 square feet and that 188,000 of that square feet will be dedicated to a Nordstrom. Now yes we all know that Sherway Gardens will be getting the first Nordstrom in Toronto, but what is important about this Nordstrom announcement is that it marks the department stores first deal with Oxford Properties Group as opposed to all their previous deals with Cadillac Fairview, illustrating that the brand is ready to invade more Canadian malls.

Now Yorkdale Shopping Centre prides itself to being a mall of firsts as they introduce a number of international retailers to Canadian market. However, even though Nordstrom will not be the first in Canada or Ontario, the new expansion does promise to bring even more foreign brands to Toronto. Regardless as I was looking through the malls website I noticed that in the coming year there will be a number of retailers making their first appearance in the Canadian market. In fact most recently Yorkdale welcomed the first AllSaints to Canada and will eventually welcome David Yurman, John Varvatos, Mulberry, White House| Black Market and my favourite Zara Home. Also finally opening at Yorkdale are honey, Massimo Dutti, Stuart Weitzman, Feragamo and LEGO.

So before you read the original post on Yorkdale Shopping Centre post for #ThrowbackThurday let’s do a quick comparison on Toronto’s two Nordstroms that will be coming in 2016.

Yorkdale Shopping Centre Nordstrom vs. Sherway Gardens Nordstrom

New store will be built next to Silver City and open in 2016 vs. New store will be build where the Sporting Life is currently. It will be open in 2016.

Three levels at 188,000 square feet vs. Two levels at 138,000 square feet

Will be right on the subway line vs. Have to take a bus

Artist rendering of exterior makes it look like a modern structure will feature a lot of natural lighting vs. Artist rendering of interior entrance suggest that the tent will provide a open concept feel leading up to the stores mall entrance.

#ThrowbackThursday Post

Sweaty Betty’s

I’m always down to try a new bar in the city and last weekend I was in a Hipster mood. Therefore, I dressed in my best plaid shirt, put on my nicest black tie, leather motorcycle jacket and headed out looking like a Rebel Without A Cause – my hair did look very James Dean that night.

The evening started with Alyse and I getting on the streetcar without a plan. We didn’t know if we were going to party in Parkdale, Liberty Village or the Ossington Strip, but eventually we opted for the Ossington Strip. As we walked north from Queen Street we saw Sweaty Betty’s, a bar Ariel had mentioned the night of her goodbye party in September of 2012. Now the reason she had made note of the establishment was because the night of her goodbye party was the opening weekend of TIFF and Sweaty Betty’s is famous for not only for being a celebrity hot spot, but because Drew Barrymore left the after-party for her movie Whip It at the Tattoo Rock Parlour to apparently bartend, although some reports say she stood behind the bar, at Sweaty Betty’s. That night she also brought along co-star Ellen Page and then boyfriend Justin Long.

The fact Drew Barrymore was there was enough reason to check the bar out. We walked in and the front room was packed with a mixed crowd of Hipsters in denim vests and ray ban glasses, guys in blazers and ties wearing pea coats and girls wearing Aztec patterned tights as well as floral and sheer tops. The front was nice with a few tables and jukebox where there were eligible bachelors hitting on the girls huddled around.

Alyse guided me to the back which looked like an antique store with an old Victorian looking couch, lamps with angelic children on them and chairs that looked like they should be in my grandmothers dated 1980’s basement. However, I love retro décor, so the whole vibe of the back room was amazing for me. Anyways, Alyse and I sat on the paisley two seat sofa that was there and we chilled, talked and commented on who was attractive and who was not, all while having a few beers. The other great part about Sweaty Betty’s was that the jukebox was at the perfect sound level meaning I wasn’t yelling a conversation to Alyse. They even have a pretty rad patio, which I didn’t spend much time on, because it was freezing…in April.

Overall I had a great time at the bar. The atmosphere was welcoming, the people were hot, the drinks were cheapish and it was just very chill. My one complaint though is the bar, because it was too small and was surrounded by bar chairs. I think the chairs should be cleared out on a Saturday night and that it should be a standing bar.

Regardless, Sweaty Betty’s on the Ossington Strip is

Glory Hole Doughnuts

If there is one thing I love about office meetings it is that there is food! Now last time we had an office meeting we ordered pizza for lunch because our meeting was in the afternoon. However, this time our meeting was first thing in the morning, which meant coffee and Glory Hole Doughnuts. Now yes as we were getting our delicious pastries, we did - no had to - make mention to the name Glory Hole, but if you think about it the owner of the shop did a brilliant job in naming the company.

Of course glory hole has a very sexual connotation to it. A glory hole for those who do not know is the hole in the wall where people in two separate rooms or stalls can engage in sexual activity with each other. The first time I heard my friend say I had a glory hole, I honestly thought he was talking about his sexual adventures, but then my oh so innocent friend said she had a glory hole and I knew it was nothing sexual, because my other friend is so innocent she probably didn’t even know the sexual association to the name. I have to also ad that the slogan is “What creams are made of.”

I investigated about the company further and found out it is a doughnut store located in Parkdale on Queen Street West. The doughnut shop makes every doughnut fresh daily and by hand. However, it doesn’t surprise me that they are made by hand because they are truly like works of art. Each doughnut looks absolutely amazing with either some sort of drizzling or nut sprinkled detailing on them. At the meeting I tried the S’mores doughnut which had this amazing burnt taste to it that made me think I was around a campfire. They also have a doughnut called “Stuff” which has flakes of bacon on top. Along with those two I mentioned you can also get the Mocha Almond Fudge, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate, Blood Orange, Salted Caramel & Spicy Pecan and Bread and Butter. My mother also spoke of a doughnut called the Elvis and Marshmallow as well as the Cookies and Cream Doughnut which were not featured on the website or in the box we got for our meeting, leading me to believe they have rotating menus.

To find out what doughnuts you can get your best bet is going to the charming store which has a retro Pleasantville feeling to it. From the blackboard menu – which I feel is common for eateries on Queen West – to the retro red school lunch trays which display the doughnuts to the colour blue on the walls and the lights in the ceiling, you probably will feel as though you are stepping into a different era.

Regardless if there is one glory hole you should all should try it is Glory Hole Doughnuts. They are the most filling pastry you will ever have and let’s be honest the more interesting the doughnut the yummier it will be. Ps. I do realize how dirty that last sentence was, but I couldn’t phrase it any other way.

That is Why I Love Toronto
