Why I Love Toronto
I have come to like the Parkdale area. As a child my father spoke of his experiences growing up in the neighbourhood and he always mentioned how sketchy and unattractive it was. Working right on the boarder of Parkdale, in Liberty Village, I can still see some unattractive elements that give the neighbourhood its reputation. However, I believe the area is changing for the better, especially on the Queen Street West portion which has seen an increase in vintage stores, bars and coffee shops. Parkdale is slowly becoming an area where Torontonians can come to socialize and have fun.
I personally love heading to The Mascot, where I am known to grab a coffee and read a book or finish some work I couldn’t get done at the office. The coffee shop has always stood out for me because of the bench in front of its main window where people can enjoy a drink in the summer sun. I headed there for the first time a few months back to work on a press release. I had entered the shop and noticed it was more spacious than I had anticipated. However, I was happy for the space because if there is one thing I hate about Starbucks or Second Cup is that you are crammed in a small space with no room to move around. Sometimes the parameters are so tight that it’s hard to concentrate with everyone around. At The Mascot it’s really easy to an isolate yourself and not be distracted by others. The space could also be used as a dance floor and there were moments when I really wanted to dance to the server’s playlist which consisted of Beyonce’s new album.
What I loved most about the café was the décor, which really represented and supported the businesses in the area. Even when my father spoke of Parkdale as being a sketchy area, the one redeemable quality for him was the vintage furniture stores in the area. With old theatre chairs, retro elementary school seats, the high school desk and chair combo, which I can no longer fit in, and a vintage toy riding horse, The Mascot was an odd step back in time.
In the end, I highly recommend going to The Mascot if you need to get work done or need a place to have a quiet date with a special someone or a friend.
