Why I Love The CNE Grounds
Horticultural Building/ Muzik Nightclub
The next building I will be featuring on my Why I Love The CNE Grounds is a building that now houses Muzik nightclub. Now many of us of course only know the building by it nightclub name, but its official name is The Horticulture Building. The Horticultural Building has sat on the CNE grounds since 1907 when it was built to replace the burnt down Crystal Palace which stood on the property until 1906. The building constructed by George W. Gouinlock features a beautiful steel and glass domed roof which really is the highlight for the building. The buildings original intent was to showcase agricultural, horticultural and floricultural displays. The building was even used to train and house new recruits during both World Wars.
However, there is a very tragic story that is tied in with this buildings history. In 1949 a cruise ship (the Noronic) caught fire and killed all the passengers (estimated at 200) on board. As a result of the massive body numbers The Horticultural Building was temporarily turned into a morgue. Now if we go back a month to my Haunted Toronto week we learned that if there is a tragic death or deaths there is most likely to be a haunting. Well this building is said to be haunted and apparently many people hate entering the building alone at night.
Today of course many people know the building as one of Toronto’s most beautiful nightclubs. However, if this building is indeed haunted then going to a haunted club is really creepy because it’s like a Monster Mash everyday of the year!
Also I must add that the Crystal Palace was an absolutely stunning piece of architecture. I will post a picture because I want to show you how this building lives up to its name. I believe if this building was still standing today that it would be the destination prom and wedding venue as opposed to the Liberty Grand.
So next time you are at Muzik Nightclub just remember the buildings history…well not the part when it turned into a morgue, because that to some may be just a bit traumatizing.
