Why I Love Toronto Reason #307
The Car Sticking out of the Side of 299 Queen Street West
Now before I go into this post I just want to tell all you that this was not supposed to be today’s post. Lo and behold as I was writing today’s post, I realized that it couldn’t be Reason #308, but that it had to be Reason #365. As I wrote, what is now the ending to my blog I was in tears and I hope that when September 1st comes about, you will be able to see why I started to cry.
However I am getting a little ahead of myself. I still have to give you 57 reason of Why I Love Toronto to give you. So let’s start with the car sticking out of 299 Queen Street West. We all know that white car, it has been there for as long as I remember. Now what the meaning of the car is or why the decided to put it at the side of the building is something I couldn’t find out. However, I see it as a symbol that no matter what barriers the news vehicle may encounter when there is breaking news it will breakthrough any barrier to give you the news as it happens. Now many of you may agree with me because we all know CP24 as Toronto’s 24 hour breaking news station – I mean I think half of Torontonians must have CP24 as their welcome channel or turn to it as soon as they wake up. But I think it embodied that meaning even when the side of the car said City Pulse, before it relocated to Yonge Dundas Square after being bought by Rogers Communications.
Another thing I remember about the car, that I’m not sure it does anymore, was that the lights used to blink and the wheels used to move. I even remember my dad always saying look at that fresh car crash. Now at the time I thought crashing into buildings and exploding cars were cool, because let’s be honest every 7 year old boy thinks that cool. Today, however I see it as a Queen Street Icon, that if it was taken down would be a great loss to the street. Tourists even love the car and sometimes you can see their eyes almost pop out of their head. I have been asked on occasion to take pictures of tourists in front of the car.
The car coming out of 299 Queen Street West always amused me as a child and what amuses me about it today is how they made the display. I would love to talk to the architect/ artist who did this and find out how they got the building to look like that and if the car is real (which it probably isn’t) or not.
That Is Why I Love Toronto.
