Why I Love Toronto Reason #222
When the roof of the Skydome is open
Remember when I said that MLSE didn’t want Maple Leaf Gardens to have the Maple Leafs name associated with the building anymore and I said that no matter what if you change the name of the building everyone who knows it as Maple Leaf Gardens will forever call it Maple Leaf Gardens? Well this is how I feel about the Skydome because let’s be honest the Skydome is the perfect name for this building. Therefore, I will never call it the Rogers Centre
Now today the boys of summer are back and there is a lot of pressure on them to be Toronto’s first winning team in a long time. In fact unlike the Leafs who haven’t won a game since the 60’s the Blue Jay’s last World Series win was in 1993 – that’s almost a decade – therefore, I think it’s time for another win for our boys. But anyway this post is dedicated to the home of Jays. Now there are a lot of things to love about the Skydome, but I put the roof as my main reason. The roof of the Skydome is retractable and is the first of its kind in the world. In fact according to one source there is actually at patent on the roof. Sometimes the roof is closed and it’s a bit depressing to be there, but on those beautiful sunny days when the dome opens up to lets in the sun and it feels like your outside at a ball game and not in a stadium. The blue skies, the occasional cloud passing by, the birds flying above you, as well as the CN tower and condos towering over you as you watch the ball game is just awesome. You have to love those summer days when the dome is open.
Opened in 1898 and designed by Rod Robbie the dome is not only home to the Jays but is home to the Argonauts as well. The dome can sit up to 50,000 people and also hosts trade shows, concerts and the annual march break festival where there are carnival rides for children to enjoy. Also there are rumours that the stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the Pan Am Games in 2015.
It also has a hotel attached to it with around 70 rooms overlooking the field. Now since there are some rooms that are facing inside the stadium one would have to be very careful about what they do. One time a topless guest had nothing, but a thong on while she watched the game from her room. However, events like these happen often apparently. Since it has opened there have been three incidents where couples have had sex in front of the window where fans could see and one man (who thought the glass was one way) was masturbating at the window. Because of this they have security monitoring the room windows just in case acts like these happen.
Another thing to notice is Michael Snow’s audience – those gold guys sticking out from the dome’s façade. Now I didn’t know they were people I honestly thought up until a few years ago they were gargoyles.
Now that the boys of summer are back I think it is time to head down to the skydome and catch a ball game, say we want a pitcher not a belly itcher and sing take me out to the ball game. I honestly believe that our boys will take us to the world series this year and when they do I’ll be there and hopefully the roof will open and we’ll all root root root for the home team!
That Is Why I Love Toronto.
