Why I Love Toronto Reason #143
Central Technical School
Okay let’s all take a moment and agree with me that sometimes when you need to get at College and Bathurst or to Bathurst station it’s just easier to walk. I mean sometimes that streetcar never comes and it is a nice walk, seeing drunks on their porch. Anyways I’m a walker, I walk everywhere depending on the weather – hell to the no if there is a blizzard occurring I rather ait an hour or bus then trudge through snow. Anyways when walking north or south between Bloor and College on Bathurst you will most likely encounter a very high fence. If you peer through the metal fence you will see a track/ field and a really old building. That building is Central Technical School. Now I went to a very modern high school, reason #87 to be exact, so it didn’t have that much history to it, but Central Tech has a very, VERY long history. Now I won’t get into the history, because frankly it is really complicated and it will bore you, maybe even more than school bores the majority of you. So instead here are the highlights!
Central Tech is a school specializing in technical studies, but also in visual arts and has, or will have, the new LAWS program. The old land used to be on an Apple Orchard which is kind of cool to think you could Apple picking in Toronto, However that was before it began to become a residential area. When it became more suburban and that area was a big burb in the day the School Board at the time felt their needed to be a school and purchased the land to open a public school. The current location of Central Tech is actually the fourth home for the school which was established in 1888 and had various homes around the GTA.
The current building has some interesting aspects to it. It is the only school today in the TDSB that has the Coat of Arms of Toronto above the main entrance, something I did not existed. The reason being that the citizens of Toronto paid for the school –none of the levels of governments contributed. Also the Fireplace in Exhibition Room 208 was donated from the builder. If there is one thing I love it is fireplaces in classroom! Imagine just lighting a fire at school! And for all of you whose favorite firework is the burning schoolhouse I don’t mean it in a destructive way! Also in 1951 it expanded and added a wing for an aircraft and auto mechanics facilities as well as other normal school things. But the most important word in that sentence was AIRCRAFT!
Also during World War Two because of the schools facilities it was used to teach marching drills, wireless operating, aircraft mechanics and tank repair. So the school was a 24 hour facility, teaching students during the day and teaching those from the Royal Canadian Air Force, Army and Navy at night. The school played a major part in the war.
It is also famous for a few movies and music video in which the school has been featured in. It was in a Billy Talent Music Video, Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Goodwill Hunting.
The school is not amazing for its history, but it just an amazing old building with such detail. The style of architecture it follows is called Collegiate gothic which can be seen in many schools within the Toronto area. The building kind of reminds me of something you would find at U of T. But regardless, I say anything gothic style is kind of scary, it gives a haunted feeling to it and Central Tech is no exception, when the trees re leave-less it looks kind of creepy. I sometimes when I’m drunk walk by it very quickly.
The Schools motto is “To thrive, To Seek, To Find and not to Yield” well this school has done anything but yield which such a history. There are days I wish I went to an old school just so I could walk down the history – I mean standing in the place where tank repair was done would have been kind of cool. However, I did love where I went to school, but Central Tech is still
